GIVE YOUR SCHOOL A GIFT WHILE HAVING FUN
SHINE ON SEATTLE OCT 9
Sustainable Queen Anne is proud to be a sponsor of Shine On Seattle, a community-led project to connect renewable energy opportunities to Seattle schools. As part of this project, we are assisting Shine On Seattle’s founder, Elta Ratliff, to host a community bike ride to raise money for the purchase of shares in Seattle City Light’s Community Solar Project on behalf of local schools. The ride begins at Gas Works Park at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 9th, 2011, and follows the Burke Gilman Trail to Magnuson Park and back. Ride participants can support their own school by indicating at registration which school will benefit from their ticket purchase. Energy credits generated by each school’s shares will be applied to that school’s Seattle City Light bills. Every school with a Seattle City Light account can be nominated to benefit from proceeds of the bike ride. Tickets for the ride can be purchased online at http://shineonseattle-auto.eventbrite.com/ or at the registration booth at Gas Works Park at 8:00 a.m. on October 9, 2011. For more information, go to http://shineonseattle.org/Shine_On_Seattle/Welcome.html . In addition to fundraising, this family bike ride will raise awareness of the city’s renewable energy programs, support construction of the Community Solar Project, and teach students and their families about integrating solar energy into daily life. It will also serve to strengthen community ties across our neighborhoods.
To achieve these goals, we need volunteers to step forward to help with distributing fliers, participating at tabling events, and generating “buzz” in the schools and neighborhoods. We also need a “Solar Champion” at each school to spread the word and help organize volunteers for the event day. Sponsors are needed to provide goodie bag items and assist with marketing and promotion. If you can help, please email info@shineonseattle.org, or call Elta Ratliff at 404-202-8083. Our Recent and Current Activities
Solarize Queen AnneSolarize Queen Anne was a big success! Solarize Queen Anne was a neighborhood effort designed to
bring solar energy to Queen Anne homes (including multifamily buildings),
wherein interested neighbors came together to enjoy significant savings
through the bulk purchase of solar electric panels. The project resulted in 31 new solar installations in Queen Anne. Previously there had been 6 in the neighborhood. Benefits of the program included creation
of local green jobs, reduction of your utility bill, and reduction of carbon
emissions. This project was intended to follow the successes of a similar model implemented in Portland last year,
which has so far quadrupled Portland's residential solar installations and
helped to bring down solar prices throughout Oregon. Other neighborhoods in Seattle are replicating the project, using Sustainable Queen Anne's model: Magnolia and NE Seattle. |
